Residential Tenancies (Prevention of Family Homelessness) Bill 2018
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Protects people renting homes from buy-to-let landlords by stopping them from being evicted just because the owner wants to sell the property. A sale could still happen, but the tenant would stay in place and the rest of the tenancy would continue. It matters because it aims to reduce family homelessness caused by eviction for sale.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 and Residential Tenancies Act 2016 to give greater protection to households renting from buy-to-let landlords. Under the Act it would no longer be legal to evict tenants in buy-to-let properties on the grounds that the property is to be sold. A sale could take place however with the current tenant and any remaining portion of the tenancy agreement still in place.
