Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposed change would make it unlawful to use a child’s personal data for marketing, profiling or micro-targeting, with a particular aim of shielding children from junk food and drinks advertising. It also shifts the wording away from treating this as an offence, so people can more easily enforce their data rights through the courts and avoid doubt about what behaviour is banned. The idea matters because it tries to give children stronger privacy protection and address concerns about childhood obesity.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Data Protection Act 2018 in order to protect a child's personal data from being processed for marketing purposes and to provide for related matters.
