Industrial Development (Science Foundation Ireland) (Amendment) Bill 2018

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Changes the law governing Science Foundation Ireland so it must keep a better balance between funding basic research and applied research, rather than leaning too far toward one side. It would also require an independent review of the agency’s performance against that goal and change the board rules so at least three members come from academia and at least three from industry. That matters because it could shape how public research money is spent and how closely the agency serves both scientific discovery and practical innovation.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Industrial Development (Science Foundation Ireland) Act 2003 (as amended) to make provision to alter part of the functions requirement of Science Foundation Ireland to ensure balance between the promoting, developing and assisting the carrying out of oriented basic research as well as applied research; to initiate an independent review into the performance of the Foundation against that objective; to provide that the members of said Foundation's Board would include at least 3 members from the field of academics and at least 3 members from the field of industrialists, and to provide for related matters
