Prohibition of Conversion Therapies Bill 2018
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Prohibition of Conversion Therapies Bill 2018 would ban “conversion therapy” in Ireland, meaning any practice or treatment aimed at changing, suppressing, or eliminating a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. It would make it unlawful to offer, advertise, or carry out such practices, and also to take someone out of the State for that purpose. Health and counselling professionals would be specifically barred from providing it or referring people to it, and if a professional were convicted, their regulator would have to be told. Penalties would include fines and possible jail terms, with heavier penalties for taking someone abroad or for professional involvement.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to prohibit conversion therapy, as a deceptive and harmful act or practice against a person's sexual orientation, gender identity and, or gender expression.
