First Aid and Mental Health in Schools (Existing Teachers) Bill 2018
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
School staff would have to receive training in both first aid and mental health first aid, with refresher training every five years unless they had already covered this in recent teacher training. Schools would also need an approved first aid policy, a properly stocked first aid box, and records of staff training, while managers would be responsible for making sure these rules are followed. It matters because it aims to make schools better prepared for accidents and mental health emergencies, and to ensure teachers keep these skills up to date.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the introduction of a requirement that all existing staff in schools be trained in occupational first aid response and mental health first aid; to require that training in occupational first aid response and mental health first aid forms part of a continuing professional development requirement for school staff; to provide for the approval of first aid response courses and mental health first aid courses; and to provide for related matters
