Civil Liability (Amendment) Bill 2018

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would let families seek compensation when a pregnancy is lost because of negligent medical treatment, including stillbirths from 24 weeks’ gestation in those circumstances. It would also raise the maximum payment for the grief and distress caused by the wrongful death of a family member from €35,000 to €75,000. That matters because it gives recognition and some financial remedy to families affected by tragic medical errors, and updates a cap that many may see as too low.
