Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) (Amendment) Bill 2018
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
A proposed change to the victims’ rights law would give people who report alleged sexual violence, gender-based violence, or violence in a close relationship earlier access to clear information and funded legal advice. The aim is to help victims understand the investigation, what statements and evidence may be needed, what disclosure rules mean, and that they may have to give evidence and be cross-examined if the case goes to trial. It matters because many survivors find the process daunting, and better guidance at the start could make it easier to come forward and stay engaged with a prosecution.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) Act 2017 by affording relevant information and legal advice to victims of alleged offences involving sexual violence, gender based violence or violence in a close relationship and to provide for related matters.
