Social Welfare (Payment Order) (Amendment) Bill 2018
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would let the State’s Maintenance Recovery Unit go to the District Court to seek a payment order for some one-parent families getting the jobseekers transitional payment. In plain terms, it would allow the State to try to recover part of the cost from a relative who may be legally liable to contribute. It matters because it could reduce the public cost of supporting lone parents while shifting some responsibility to family members with a duty to help.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the extension of the powers of the Maintenance Recovery Unit of the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, to make a District Court application for a Payment Order, in respect of jobseekers transitional payment to one parent families, thus enabling the State to recoup, from a 'liable relative', a contribution towards the cost of providing said payment
