Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Climate Change Reporting) Bill 2018
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would give the Government’s Climate Change Advisory Council a new job: to produce guidance for companies on how to measure and report the climate risks they face, and the effects their own activities have on the climate. It would also require the council to include someone with financial risk reporting expertise, so the advice is practical for business reporting. The guidance would cover things like carbon emissions, how companies might be affected by the shift to a low-carbon economy, and how extreme weather or other climate impacts could affect their finances and strategy. It matters because it would push climate issues into ordinary company reporting, making risks more visible to investors, businesses and the public.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Climate Action and Low-Carbon Development Act 2015 to expand the responsibilities of the Government's climate change advisory council to publish guidance to companies on measuring and reporting their exposure to the risks of climate change and their impacts on the climate.
