Assaults On Older Persons Bill 2018

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Aged 65 and over, people would get extra protection under this proposal: assaults causing serious harm, serious threats, and syringe attacks against an older person would face a mandatory jail term of at least three years for adult offenders. A judge could avoid that minimum only in exceptional cases, such as where a guilty plea or major help to police would make the sentence unjust. It matters because it aims to send a stronger message and give tougher punishment for violent crime aimed at older people.

Formal long title

Bill entitled An Act to revise the law relating to the main non-fatal offences against the person and to provide for connected matters.
