Thirty-seventh Amendment of the Constitution (Repeal of offence of publication or utterance of blasphemous matter) Bill 2018

Public bill · Government · Presented

The measure would remove the word “blasphemous” from the Constitution, so the State would no longer have a constitutional basis for an offence of publishing or saying blasphemous material. It updates the wording in both Irish and English versions of the Constitution and keeps the remaining reference to seditious matter. In plain terms, it matters because it would end Ireland’s constitutional protection for a blasphemy offence.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Constitution.
