Charities (Human Rights) Bill 2018
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Adds the advancement of human rights to the list of recognised charitable purposes, so charities working to protect and promote basic rights could clearly qualify for charitable status. It would also remove the advancement of religion as a charitable purpose, changing what counts as a charity under the 2009 Charities Act. In practical terms, it would shift the law toward supporting rights-based charitable work and away from treating religious advancement as a charitable aim. That matters because charitable status affects public trust, regulation, and access to the benefits that come with being recognised as a charity.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Charities Act 2009 to include the advancement of human rights as a charitable purpose, and to remove the advancement of religion as a charitable purpose.
