Local Government Rates and Other Matters Bill 2018
Public bill · Government · Presented
Updates the rules for collecting commercial rates, giving local authorities stronger tools to chase unpaid rates, charge interest, and put a charge on property where rates are not paid. It also lets councils create and keep a database of rateable properties, requires owners and occupiers to provide needed information, and allows limited relief schemes for vacant premises or for local policy goals. It matters because it aims to make rates collection fairer and more effective while helping councils manage empty commercial buildings and support local economic plans.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to revise the law relating to the collection of rates in relation to certain properties, to provide for the establishment and maintenance of a database of those properties in the State, to provide for the amendment and repeal of certain enactments; for purposes unconnected with the foregoing, to amend the Planning and Development Act 2000 and otherwise make provision in relation to certain regional spatial and economic strategies, and to amend the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 and the Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Act 2019; and to provide for related matters.
