Criminal Justice (Conspiracy to Murder) Bill 2019

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would raise the maximum penalty for people convicted of planning a murder with others or encouraging someone else to carry one out. At present, the top sentence is 10 years, and the memorandum says this can mean relatively low sentences even in serious gang-related cases, especially where the accused pleads guilty. The aim is to let courts impose much tougher punishments, including life imprisonment, to better match the seriousness of the crime.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Criminal Justice Act 2006 to increase the sentence for persons convicted of conspiring or soliciting to commit murder.
