Firearms and Offensive Weapons (Amendment) Bill 2019
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Raising the maximum prison sentence for carrying a knife or similar offensive weapon in public from 5 years to 10 years, the proposal aims to make the penalty tougher for people convicted of these offences. Its stated purpose is to discourage knife carrying, in response to a rise in knife seizures and recent stabbings, including a fatal one involving young people.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990 by increasing the maximum sentence that can be imposed for the possession of a knife to cause injury to, incapacitate or intimidate any person.
