Thirty-ninth Amendment of the Constitution (Presidential Elections) Bill 2019
Public bill · Government · Presented
The proposed change would let every Irish citizen aged 18 or over, who is not legally barred from voting, take part in presidential elections, instead of limiting the vote to people living in the State. It would also give more time to hold a presidential election after a president’s term ends, extending the current 60-day deadline to 90 days. A temporary constitutional rule would keep the current system in place until 1 January 2025 so the detailed voting rules can be put in place.
