Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2019

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Would make it a road traffic offence to drive certain vehicles with a dog on board unless the dog is properly secured, kept in a crate or cage, or placed in a fully enclosed part of the vehicle away from passengers. It would not apply to Gardaí, Defence Forces or customs officers on duty, or to guide dogs and dogs being moved to or from herding livestock. The aim is to stop dangerous driver distraction and reduce the risk of dogs becoming missiles in a crash.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to provide for an offence of driving with an unrestrained dog on board certain mechanically propelled vehicles; for that purpose to amend the Road Traffic Act 1961 and to provide for related matters.
