Misuse of Drugs (Amendment) Bill 2019
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The bill would make it a crime to buy illegal drugs from a child and to use a child to hold drugs for sale or supply. It also sets out penalties, including fines and possible prison terms, with tougher maximum penalties if the case is dealt with in the Circuit Court. It matters because it aims to protect children from being drawn into drug dealing and to target adults who exploit them.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the law relating to the misuse of drugs and for those purposes to amend the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 to criminalise the purchase of a controlled drug from a child and to criminalise the act of causing a child to be in possession of a controlled drug for sale or supply and to provide for related matters.
