Seanad Electoral (University Members) (Amendment) Bill 2020
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Seanad Electoral (University Members) (Amendment) Bill 2020 would widen who can vote in the Seanad’s university panel elections. At present, that vote is tied to certain university graduates; under this proposal, it would be opened to all Irish adults over 18 who hold a suitable third-level qualification from an Irish higher education institution. It would also update the existing rules so they fit with the constitutional changes mentioned in the bill. The point is to make Seanad university elections more inclusive and bring more people with recognised qualifications into the electorate.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the amendment of the Seanad Electoral (University Members) Acts 1937 to 2006, to provide for the provisions of the seventh amendment of Bunreacht na hÉireann and to extend the franchise of the university panel of Seanad Éireann to all people who are over eighteen and are holders of an appropriate third level qualification from an Irish Institute of Higher Education and to provide for related matters.
