Ban on Rent Increases Bill 2020

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The measure would freeze rents for three years for both existing and new tenancies. Current tenants’ rent would be capped at the amount charged when the law starts, while rents for new lets would be tied to the Residential Tenancies Board’s rent index for similar homes in the same local area. The restriction would be reviewed every year, so it could be kept, changed, or ended if conditions alter.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 (as amended) to provide for a prohibition on rent increases for all existing and new tenancies for three years.
