Ministers and Ministers of State (Successors) Bill 2020
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
It would require the Taoiseach to quickly name replacements when a Minister or Minister of State loses their seat in a general election, so the Government reflects the new election result sooner. For Ministers, the new appointment would need Dáil approval; for Ministers of State, the replacement would be appointed by the Government already in office. The aim is to reduce the period when people who are no longer elected members continue in office and to keep Government membership aligned with the Constitution.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to ensure the prompt appointment of successors to Ministers and Ministers of State who have as a result of a general election ceased to be members of the Oireachtas; and to provide for related matters.
