Irish Nationality and Citizenship (Citizenship for Children) Bill 2020

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would restore automatic Irish citizenship for everyone born on the island of Ireland, and it would also give children who have lived here for three years over a four-year period a path to citizenship. It would make it easier for children with an Irish citizen sibling to qualify, so families can be treated more equally and the Minister can waive some naturalisation requirements where a child has strong Irish links. Its aim is to make sure children in Ireland have the same legal status and access to rights connected with citizenship.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to restore the eligibility of all persons born in the island of Ireland to Irish citizenship, to extend the eligibility for Irish citizenship to children resident for a period of time in the island of Ireland and related matters, to enhance the eligibility for Irish citizenship for children resident in the island of Ireland.
