Education (Admission to Schools) Bill 2020
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Education (Admission to Schools) Bill 2020 would stop schools from giving admission priority to children or grandchildren of former pupils. It keeps the existing allowance for siblings, but removes the rule that lets a school reserve up to 25% of places for applicants with a parent or grandparent who attended the school. The aim is to make school admissions fairer and less dependent on family connections.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend Part X (Admission to Schools) of the Education Act 1998 insofar as it relates to taking into account a student’s connection to a school by virtue of a family member having previously attended the school when deciding on an application for admission to that school, and to provide for connected matters.
