Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Bill 2020

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Sets up a new requirement for landlords to show, through an independent inspection, that a rented property meets minimum housing standards and fire safety rules before it can be let. The certificate would have to be given to the Residential Tenancies Board when the tenancy is registered, with existing rental homes potentially brought in over four years and the Minister deciding the fee. It matters because it aims to improve tenant safety and make it harder to rent out substandard or unsafe homes.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1992 so the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage may introduce regulations for landlords to prove their compliance with minimum standards and fire safety standards before a property can be rented.
