Social Welfare Commission Bill 2020
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Creates a new Social Welfare Commission to look at whether social welfare payments are enough for different types of households and to work out the minimum income needed for a basic standard of living. The commission, made up of nine minister-appointed members, could review payment rates, publish reports, make recommendations to the Minister, and suggest poverty impact assessments for government measures. It matters because it would give a regular, independent check on whether social welfare supports are keeping people out of poverty and meeting real living costs.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the establishment of a commission to make recommendations and report annually on the adequacy of social welfare rates in the State; and to provide for related matters.
