Statistics (Decade of Centenaries) Bill 2020
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Aengus Ó Snodaigh’s bill would open the 1926 census to the public much earlier than the normal 100-year waiting period, giving it a special heritage status. The aim is to let people use it for family history, historical and academic research, and to include it in the Decade of Centenaries commemorations. It matters because the 1926 census would fill a big gap between the 1911 census and later records, helping people understand how independence, civil conflict, emigration, and social change affected Ireland.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Statistics Act 1993, in relation to the first census of the population of Ireland taken since the establishment of the State; to afford that census a special heritage status and to have such released to the public for historical, genealogical and other research as part of the national Decade of Centenaries commemorations.
