Criminal Procedure and Related Matters Bill 2021

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The measure would update how Garda interviews are recorded, allowing the rules to be changed so modern audio and video recording can replace the old paper-based approach. It would also fix a number of criminal justice rules that courts have said go beyond what they are allowed to do, including rules on costs against the prosecution, mandatory minimum sentences for certain firearm and drug offences, and some appeal and sentence-review gaps involving young people. In practical terms, it aims to make criminal procedure work more smoothly and to protect parts of the law from being struck down as unconstitutional.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to make various amendments to aspects of criminal procedure and to make provision for related matters.
