Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Bill 2021

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

A proposed change to older electricity law would give the ESB more freedom to carry out works affecting the water levels of the Shannon lakes — Lough Derg, Lough Ree and Lough Allen. At present, the law places specific limits on what can be done, and the measure would remove some of those restrictions and update the wording around water-level control and related works such as digging new channels and deepening existing ones. Its main purpose is to make it easier to manage the lakes and carry out necessary maintenance or engineering work. That matters because these lakes are part of the Shannon system, so any change could affect water management, navigation and local communities.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to reduce restrictions on the power of the Electricity Supply Board to carry out works concerning the levels on the Shannon Lakes (Lough Derg, Lough Ree and Lough Allen), for this purpose to amend the Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1934; and to provide for related matters.
