Residential Tenancies (Amendment) (Extension of Notice Periods) Bill 2021
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would give tenants facing eviction an extra three months before they have to leave if their local authority certifies that they are at risk of homelessness. That certification would depend on the council being satisfied that they cannot reasonably find other accommodation and would become homeless if they moved out. Its aim is to give people and families more time to find a home and to let local authorities step in earlier so fewer people end up in emergency accommodation.
Formal long title
Bill entitled Act to provide for the automatic extension of notice periods with respect to residential tenancies where a tenant is certified as at risk of homelessness and for that purpose to amend the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 and to provide for related matters.
