Regulation of Air Traffic Over Sporting Events Bill 2021
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
A new system would let sporting event organisers or venue operators ask the Minister to designate an event where drones or similar unmanned aircraft with cameras could be used to gain an unfair betting advantage. Once an event is designated, the Irish Aviation Authority would create a temporary no-fly area above or near the venue, and the details would be published publicly. Flying such an aircraft in the restricted area would be an offence, with fines or possible jail terms, though there are exceptions for emergency services, permitted flights, other lawful authority, and flights unrelated to betting. The Minister could also refuse or cancel a designation, and affected parties could make representations or appeal to the District Court.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide certain protections against unfair betting activities in relation to certain sporting events, for that purpose to regulate the operation of certain aircrafts over sporting events and to provide for related matters.
