Local Government (Use of CCTV in Prosecution of Offences) Bill 2021

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Local authorities would get a clear legal basis to use CCTV in public places when they are investigating and prosecuting offences they are already allowed to pursue, such as littering and waste offences. It would also let them retrieve and use CCTV footage as evidence, while requiring the Minister to issue binding guidelines on how the cameras and data are handled. The aim is to fix a data-protection gap identified by the Data Protection Commission and ensure councils can keep enforcing anti-dumping and similar laws without breaching privacy rules.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to make provision in relation to the prevention, investigation, detection and prosecution by local authorities of certain offences; to provide for the use of closed circuit television in public places by local authorities for the purposes of those functions; and to provide for related matters.
