Road Traffic (Amendment) (Personal Light Electric Vehicles) Bill 2021

Would make electric scooters and certain electric bikes legal to use on Irish roads, provided they meet set safety and size rules. It would ban tampering with speed limiters, forbid holding a mobile phone while riding, set a minimum age of 16, and keep non-complying vehicles under the normal road traffic rules. It would also exempt these vehicles from motor tax and registration, and give the Road Safety Authority a role in advising on safe use.

Bill entitled an Act to regulate the use of personal light electric vehicles, including electric scooters and electrically assisted pedal cycles, and for that purpose to amend the Road Traffic Act 1961, to make a number of consequential amendments and to provide for related matters.
