Adoption (Information and Tracing) Bill 2021

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would give adult adopted people a right to get information from the State’s index that links adoption records with birth records, if they apply in writing and pay the fee. It keeps the index closed to the public, but lets an adopted person aged 18 or over access the part that relates to them. Its purpose is to make it easier for adopted people to find out about their origins and trace their family connections.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to provide for improved information and tracing for adopted persons in relation to their adoption, for that purpose to amend the Adoption Act 2010 so as to provide for access by adult adopted persons to the index maintained by an tArd-Chláraitheoir of connections between entries in the Adopted Children Register and the register of births, and to provide for connected matters.
