Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2021
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would let 16- and 17-year-olds register to vote in European Parliament and local elections, provided they live in the area and meet the other usual rules. It would lower the voting-registration age only for those two kinds of elections, not for all elections. The idea matters because it would give younger people a say earlier in decisions that affect their communities and Ireland’s role in Europe.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to reduce to sixteen years the age at which a person is entitled to be registered as a European Parliament and local government elector, and to provide for related matters.
