Clean Air (Smoky Coal Ban) Bill 2021
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The bill would require the Minister to bring in rules within a year to ban the sale, marketing, distribution and burning of smoky coal across the whole country, not just in low-smoke areas. It would extend the existing patchwork of local smoke-control zones into a nationwide ban, with enforcement and penalties aimed at fuel importers, wholesalers and retailers. Its purpose is to improve public health by cutting air pollution linked to serious breathing and heart problems, while also reducing carbon emissions.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the introduction of regulations to prohibit the sale, marketing, distribution and burning of bituminous (smoky) coal on a nationwide basis; and to provide for related matters.
