Social Welfare (Payment Order) (Amendment) Bill 2021
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Extends the Social Protection Department’s “liable relatives” process so it can also be used for the Jobseekers Transitional Payment for one-parent families. In practice, that would let the State seek a payment order from a relative who may be responsible for contributing to the cost of that support. It matters because it could reduce public spending on this payment by recovering some costs from family members where the law says they are liable.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the extension of the powers of the Liable Relatives Unit of the Department of Social Protection, to make a Determination Order in respect of Jobseekers Transitional Payment to one parent families, to include any necessary application to the District Court for a Payment Order, thus enabling the State to recoup, from a “liable relative”, a contribution towards the cost of providing said payment and related matters.
