Ban on Rent Increases Bill 2021

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Proposes a three-year ban on rent increases for both existing and new tenancies. Current tenants’ rents would be frozen at the level on the date the measure becomes law, while new tenancies would be set using the rent index for comparable homes in the same local area. The ban would be reviewed each year, making it a temporary emergency-style measure aimed at slowing rent inflation and giving tenants more certainty.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 (as amended) to provide for a prohibition on rent increases for all existing and new tenancies for three years.
