Misuse of Drugs (Cannabis Regulation) Bill 2022

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The bill would let adults aged 18 or over possess a set amount of cannabis or cannabis resin for their own personal use, rather than treating all possession as illegal. It would also make it harder for someone to avoid conviction by claiming the drugs were for personal use, because they would have to prove that claim in court. It matters because it would move Ireland toward a limited form of cannabis decriminalisation for adults.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 to enable a person who is at least 18 years of age to have possession, for the person’s personal use, of either or both cannabis and cannabis resin that in each case does not exceed a specified amount and to provide for related matters.
