Coroners (Provision for Jury Selection) (Amendment) Bill 2022
Public bill · Private Member · Presented
The measure would change the coroner’s law so the jury for the Stardust inquest could be chosen using the normal jury-selection rules already used in court cases. It would let the coroner summon eligible jurors, decide the area they come from and how they are called, and pick the final jury by ballot in open court. It also gives each side a limited number of jurors they can reject without giving a reason. The aim is to provide a clearer, more familiar process for selecting a jury in a high-profile inquest.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Coroners Act 1962 to make provision for the coroner to select a jury using the provisions of the Juries Act 1976 for the purposes of the Stardust Inquest.
