Garda Síochána (Amendment) Bill 2022

Public bill · Government · Presented

The measure would change the rules on who can carry out certain lower-court prosecutions handled by Gardaí. Right now, a Garda who starts a case must also conduct it; the change would let one Garda begin the prosecution and a different Garda take it over in court, including cases already started before the change. It matters because it gives more flexibility in managing Garda prosecutions and removes a court interpretation that had narrowed the current wording.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend section 8 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005; and to provide for related matters.
