Central Bank (Amendment) Bill 2022
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
A person who has survived cancer could not be turned away or treated less favourably by banks, insurers, or other financial service providers just because of their cancer history, once they have been free from treatment for at least five years. The proposed rules cover people diagnosed with cancer either before age 21 or at 21 and older, and they also stop providers from requiring someone to disclose a past cancer diagnosis in applications for financial services or insurance. Any provider that ignores this ban could face criminal penalties, including fines and possible prison terms. It matters because it would make it easier for cancer survivors to get mortgages, loans, and insurance on fair terms without being judged solely on a past illness.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Central Bank Act 1942 and prohibit financial service providers from discriminating against survivors of cancer from accessing financial services and to provide for related matters.
