Criminal Justice (Public Order) (Amendment) Bill 2023

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would introduce mandatory prison terms for adults who assault certain public-facing workers and cause them harm, including hospital staff, Gardaí, firefighters, ambulance crews and other peace officers. It sets a minimum sentence of six months for a summary conviction or two years for a conviction on indictment, and says judges could not suspend that minimum time. The aim is to give extra protection to people doing emergency and public service jobs, and to make attacks on them carry a guaranteed custodial penalty.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994 to make specific provision for minimum sentences for certain assault offences; and to provide for related matters.
