Representative Actions for the Protection of the Collective Interests of Consumers Bill 2023
Public bill · Government · Presented
Creates a way for approved consumer bodies, including bodies from other EU countries, to take court action on behalf of groups of consumers when a trader breaks consumer law. It also sets up the rules for who can be approved, how those bodies are monitored, how consumers join an action for compensation, and how settlements, costs and evidence will be handled. It matters because it gives consumers a stronger collective route to stop bad practices and seek redress without each person having to sue alone.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to give effect to Directive (EU) 2020/1828 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2020 on representative actions for the protection of the collective interests of consumers and repealing Directive 2009/22/EC; and to provide for related matters.
