Child Care (Amendment) Bill 2023

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

A new offence would be created for selling nitrous oxide gas, including online, to anyone under 18, where it could be used to get intoxicated. It would also give Gardaí power to seize nitrous oxide containers from a child in a public place if they reasonably believe the gas is being misused in a way likely to cause intoxication. The measure aims to reduce harmful “laughing gas” use among children and young people.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to regulate the sale of nitrous oxide gas by prohibiting its sale in a reusable cylinder or disposable cartridge to a person who has not attained the age of 18 years and for that purpose to amend the Child Care Act 1991 and to provide for related matters.
