Ministers and Secretaries (Attorney General) Bill 2023
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Sets new rules for the Attorney General to make the office work more clearly in the public interest. It would stop Ministers from claiming confidentiality over Attorney General advice when they cite that advice in the Dáil or Seanad to explain their position on a Bill or resolution, and it would require the Attorney General to put the public interest first when handling State claims and litigation, with a focus on fairness, speed, lower costs and settling legitimate claims where appropriate. It also formalises delegation inside the office, bars private practice and extra fees, and brings the Attorney General under the same conduct rules as other office holders.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to make further provision in relation to the office of the Attorney General.
