Climate Action and Biodiversity (Mandates of Certain Organisations) Bill 2023

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposed changes would rewrite the duties of Bord na Móna and Coillte so that climate action and biodiversity sit at the centre of their work. For Bord na Móna, that means managing bogs and other lands in a way that helps cut emissions, restore peatlands, protect nature, support a fair transition for workers and local communities, and create sustainable jobs and recreation. For Coillte, it would mean running forestry and land use on a sustainable basis, protecting native woodland and biodiversity, supporting public access and recreation, and making forestry decisions with climate goals in mind. It also adds a stronger requirement to consult relevant Ministers and the National Parks and Wildlife Service on forestry development in scientifically sensitive areas.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Turf Development Act 1946 and the Forestry Act 1988 in order to reflect obligations regarding climate action and the protection and enhancement of biodiversity in the mandate and functions of the organisations established under those Acts.
