European Convention on Human Rights (Challenge to British Government Amnesty) Bill 2023
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Aireacht would have to bring a case to the European Court of Human Rights if the UK Parliament passes amnesty laws covering some crimes connected to the North of Ireland. Its aim is to let the court test whether such an amnesty would break human rights standards, especially in relation to troubles-related offences. This matters because it is a direct response to proposed UK legacy legislation and seeks to challenge any blanket protection from prosecution.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the State to make an application to the European Court of Human Rights, in the event of the enactment of British legislation granting amnesty in respect of criminal acts in or relating to the North of Ireland; and to provide for related matters.
