Local Government (Community Gardens) Bill 2023

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Local councils would have to set out and publish a clear policy for community gardens, saying how they are developed, allocated and used, and update it at least every three years. People or groups in the local area could apply for a garden, councils would keep a waiting list and make local rules for how gardens are let and used, and they would also have to report each year on how the policy is working. It matters because it would make community gardens easier to access and better managed, helping with green space, local food growing, wellbeing and biodiversity.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend and extend the Local Government Act 2001 and, for that purpose, to provide for applications for a community garden; to require local authorities to publish a community garden policy; and to provide for related matters.
