Air Navigation and Transport (Arms Embargo) Bill 2024
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposed law would stop Ireland from allowing military goods and “dual-use” items to pass through the State, or be exported from it, when they are destined for Israel, or when there is a strong chance they could be used by Israel. It would also require checks on aircraft that seek permission to carry weapons through Ireland, including inspecting cargo and paperwork, and stopping the plane from leaving if banned goods are found. In addition, the Minister for Transport would have to report regularly to the Oireachtas on exemption requests that were refused and on inspections carried out. It matters because it would tighten Ireland’s controls on weapons transit and show a firmer position on preventing arms from moving through the country in connection with the conflict in Gaza.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for restrictions on the transit and export of weapons of war from and through the State to the state of Israel and to provide for appropriate inspections of planes seeking to transit weapons through the State, and to provide for related matters.
