Law Reform (Contracts) Bill 2024

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The Bill would update Irish contract law so that, in some cases, a person who is not originally part of a contract can enforce a promise made for their benefit. It also sets out how contracts can be changed or ended, what defences a party can use, and how to avoid someone being sued twice for the same obligation. Why it matters: it aims to make contract law clearer, fairer and more predictable, especially where third-party rights are involved or a contract becomes impossible to perform.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to provide for third party rights in relation to enforcement and performance of contracts; to provide for orderly consequences of discharge of a contract due to frustration; and to provide for related matters.
